Was Wasim Akram Involved in Match Fixing? Full Controversy Explained
Wasim Akram is regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in cricket history. With 414 Test wickets, 502 ODI wickets and a major role in Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup victory, he became known around the world as the “Sultan of Swing.”
But despite his legendary achievements, one controversy continued to follow him—the allegations of match fixing investigated by the Qayyum Commission.
In 1999, a Lahore-based bookmaker named Saleem Pervez appeared before the commission investigating corruption in Pakistan cricket. He made serious allegations against Wasim Akram, but later withdrew his statement. Former Pakistan fast bowler Ata-ur-Rehman also made allegations and later changed his testimony.
The commission could not find enough conclusive evidence to ban Wasim Akram or declare him guilty of match fixing. However, Justice Malik Mohammad Qayyum’s report used three words that would remain attached to Akram’s legacy:
“Not Above Suspicion.”
Wasim Akram was fined, and the report recommended that he should not be appointed Pakistan captain again. However, he was never banned from cricket and was not convicted of match fixing by any court.
