IPL 2027: Will MS Dhoni Play One More Season for CSK?

While cricket fans are busy with India's home series, there is big latest cricket news for Dhoni fans ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season (Source: CBTF Speed News).

In late October 2026, MS Dhoni said he will decide before December whether he plays one more IPL season for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). That timing matters, because all teams must submit their retention lists by 15 November 2026, ahead of the mini-auction in Goa on 16 December 2026.

A season on the sidelines

Dhoni was part of the CSK squad for IPL 2026 but did not play a single match, the first full season he has ever missed. CSK first said he had a calf strain that would keep him out for about two weeks, and later in the season the franchise spoke of a thumb injury. He never made it onto the field.

Without him, Ruturaj Gaikwad captained the side and Sanju Samson, who joined CSK in a trade with Rajasthan Royals before the season, kept wicket. CSK finished eighth with 6 wins from 14 matches. After CSK's last home game on 18 May 2026, Dhoni took a lap of honour at Chepauk, which many fans read as a farewell.

Dhoni and CSK

It is worth remembering what Dhoni means to CSK. He led the franchise from the first IPL in 2008, briefly handed the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja before IPL 2022 and took it back mid-season, and then led CSK to their fifth title in 2023, which tied Mumbai Indians' record of five IPL trophies. He passed the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad before IPL 2024.

He has played 278 IPL matches and scored 5,439 runs, and only Rohit Sharma has captained a team to as many IPL titles.

What happens next

If Dhoni decides to play, CSK will retain him again before 15 November. If he steps away, it will be the end of an era for the franchise and for the IPL. Either way, the decision will be the biggest talking point of the IPL 2027 off-season.

Dhoni's future is trending in cricket samachar, and the whole of Chennai is waiting for his answer.
