Prior to the T20 World Cup 2022, Team India's Rohit Sharma completed their final T20I assignment. On Wednesday, they faced Temba Bavuma's South Africa in the first T20I of a three-match series at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram (September 28, 2022). Rohit and company kept up their winning streak leading up to the World Cup later this year after a thrilling three-match series victory over Australia. Before the match Rohit said, “It is a unique location. We have fond memories of competing here for India and with Deccan Chargers as well. The fact that multiple people stepped up and delivered was the biggest plus. You as management are pleased with it. In T20s, the mistake margin is little. We were daring as well as taking risks. It sometimes fails to adhere. There is still room for improvement. Coming back after a break against a difficult team is challenging.”

This is South Africa's second trip to India for a T20I series in the past four months. The previous time the Men in Blue hosted the Proteas, the 5-match series finished in a 2-2 draw with the last game being rained out.

Temba Bavuma was captaining South Africa, and Rohit Sharma was the skipper of India in the T20I series.

Bhuvneshwar & Hardik Pandya didn’t play for India in this series. Prior to the World Cup next month, they engaged in conditioning-related training at the NCA in Bengaluru.

Just two T20Is and one ODI have been held at the Greenfield International Stadium thus far in the history of international cricket. A T20I match versus the West Indies was the most recent game to be played here. West Indies defeated India by 8 wickets with 9 balls to spare in a one-sided but fairly unexpected match. In Thiruvananthapuram, India won the toss and chose to field against South Africa. Deepak Chahar and Arshdeep Singh may not have participated in the series against Australia because the former was injured for a significant portion of it. The South African top order was totally destroyed by them in the first four overs, proving Rohit Sharma's confidence in them was well-placed.

Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa, was removed by Chahar in the first over. Then, in the second over, Rilee Rossouw was dismissed miraculously by Arshdeep Singh, who struck three times in his opening over by removing Quinton de Kock and David Miller. The talented Tristan Stubbs was then recruited by Chahar in the third. SA lost five wickets for just nine runs. Considering how brutal their initial collapse was, South Africa did well to reach 106/8 with Keshav Maharaj leading the recovery with a 35-ball 41.

In order to play their inning, India entered the field. The first few overs saw the loss of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, and India's powerplay total of 17 runs was the lowest ever in a T20I match in the country's history. The hosts are pursuing a modest score of 107 and have been kept on course by Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav.

Suryakumar Yadav reached his eighth T20I half-century thanks to some outstanding batting. Rahul scored a half-century and smashed a six to give his team the victory. India defeated South Africa by 8 wickets in the opening T20I of the series.
