Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli both scored half-centuries in the pursuit, but India eventually ran out of energy. India threatened to win the game for the hosts in the chase despite losing KL Rahul early. Together, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli scored 79 and 60 runs for the second wicket. India crossed the 50-mark in the ninth over thanks to Dhawan, who took the initiative. He completed his fifty-point mark after 51 deliveries, while Kohli too had a successful debut after hitting his first ball for a four. Ngidi strikes just as South Africa appeared to be in danger from Pant and Shreyas Iyer. Iyer was hit by a short ball, ending the 29-run stand. took a glove and went after it. Pant also loses for 16, one ball later. After missing the flip, Pant was easily stumped down the leg side by Phehlukwayo.

It was heartbreaking, but Kohli was out after 51 out of 63. Attempts to sweep Shamsi, but the ball strikes the cue end of the bat. Bavuma caught it easily.

Dhawan is struck out for 79 by Maharaj, ending the 92-run stand. India was comfortably situated at 137 in 25 overs when South Africa got a wicket, which was fortunate timing. Kohli must now continue to play well and lead his team to victory.

Bavuma and van der Dussen made 204 for the third wicket on a sluggish surface and also got the highest fourth-wicket stand for South Africa against India.

After Bavuma won the toss and South Africa had a shaky start against Jasprit Bumrah, Janneman Malan appeared to be completely lost. The opener was caught behind and out for six, giving Bumrah his first powerplay wicket since the 2019 World Cup quarterfinal match between India and New Zealand in Manchester. Aiden Markram was run out for three and Quinton de Kock laboured to a score of 27 off of 41.

At 68 for 3, it had appeared that India would be able to tighten the screws even further, but Bavuma provided some adamant opposition, and van der Dussen swiftly cemented his position as the enforcer. Although R Ashwin was able to withstand the pressure, India was missing the old Yuzvendra Chahal on that particular day. To relieve the pressure, the leg spinner bowled too many loose deliveries and allowed boundaries to get through.

Since their series in India in March 2020 experienced a loss in the first games at Dharamsala and had the other two matches postponed for pandemic concerns, South Africa has only won three of their past eight completed ODIs. India has also won five of its nine games in the format since that time. The reason there are no WCSL points at stake is because the series has been transferred to South Africa.
